Mexican Day

Picture
Keresley Fiesta

Every half term at Keresley we have a week of insight to different cultures, choosing a specific country that we focus on throughout the week. When the country is chosen display boards are made and placed on the Language of the month board and other areas around the school.

We then have a day based on that country, making the country’s main foods, listening to their music, looking at their culture as well as mixing the country into each lessons, for example the country’s currency is used in maths.
This month’s country was Mexico, with the Centres new teacher Sue taking charge showing us some of her country’s beautiful culture. Over the first few days staff members were helping Sue prepare, making piñata’s, cooking Mexican food and preparing the hall for Mexican day and getting it all ready for the students to have a great day.

As the Mexico day arrived, the students were ushered into the school hall, excited for what the day might hold for them. The students rushed into the first lesson where Sue had a presentation prepared for them ready to give them an insight to her country’s culture. In the first lesson Sue gave the students a little taste of Mexico, explaining why they speak Spanish, showing them about different festivals like ‘The Day of the Dead’ and explaining some of the history of Mexico.

At lunch time Sue held a small Fiesta, cooking some tacos and some excellent pudding, with all the students and staff trying the food, after they had eaten and enjoyed the food Sue brought the piñata out and the students looked over towards it, instantly getting up and crowding round eager to have a go. With students missing hits some being landed they gave the piñata one last hit and it exploded with sweets and confetti falling rewarding them for beating the piñata down.

After a great day all the students left to go home, expressing many thanks to Sue for such a great day filled with fun and excitement.
